Marie Louise Elshout (1967)
Marie Louise Elshout schildert landschappen waarin de duisternis van de natuur overheerst en waarin het plattelandsleven en sektarische gemeenschappen een grote rol spelen. Gevoelens van eenzaamheid, vreemde rituelen, bijgeloof en een fascinatie voor taboes staan centraal in haar doeken.
Marie Louise werkt buiten de traditionele materialen zoals olieverf, acryl en potlood tevens met organische materialen zoals bladeren, zand en aarde. De ruwe texturen staan in contrast met de realistisch geschilderde personen op de doeken. Deze vrouwen zijn in zwart/wit geschilderd waardoor het realistische element direct weer in twijfel getrokken wordt. Zijn deze vrouwen echt aanwezig, of tonen zij zich als geestverschijningen uit een obscuur verleden?
Marie Louise Elshout paints landscapes in which the darker side of nature prevails. Rural life, sectarian communities are predominantly; feelings such as loneliness, extraneous rituals, superstition and a fascination with taboos are central to her work.
Besides working with traditional materials as oilpaint, acrylics and pencil, Marie Louise also works with organic materials such as tree leaves, sand and soil. These rough textures are in contrast with realistically painted individuals, women painted in black and white. Do these women really exist or are they shadows from a haunted past?
